25 Station Road, Littlethorpe, Leicestershire (Bingley’s Shop)

Dating from the mid-19th century and obviously built for a tradesperson with the workshop doors to the right hand side, the workshop space extending back in an acute L shape to fit the plot.

25 Station Road now a private residence.

The left hand side housed the shop, with the entrance door on the left, and shop window adjacent. Those were bricked and replaced with a single window to match the others, however the old door and window are still there to be seen.

In 1891 Arthur Green born in Huncote and aged 30 is trading from here as a grocer, 1901 and he now describes himself as a grocer and baker. 1911 he is still here but has dropped the baker description to simply self employed grocer. Thirty years on from his appearance in the census reports and he is still here in 1921.

Arthur was quite active in village life, becoming a parish constable by 1897, a district councillor in 1910, and on the board of guardians in 1913.

By the time of the 1939 register Emily Steel a 65 year old widow is here and describing herself as a general grocer.

I remember this from the 1950’s simply as Bingleys. During this time the shopkeeper was Joan Pickering, daughter of Cyril and Alice Bingley whose property it was. Cyril was a carpenter and undertaker.

Fond memories for me of the step up to open the door, the ring of the shop bell, and a traditional shop counter with shelving behind, on which stood glass sweet jars and stacks of cigarette packets. I don’t recall much of the other stock although it was a general store, as a kid it was the “quarter” bag of sherbet lemons and the like weighed out on the scales, later it was useful for cigarettes!
